Top 10 I Was An Expat Wife posts of 2010

Top 10 posts of 2010I’m looking forward to 2011; I have a feeling it’s going to be an awesome year. But in the spirit of “you can’t know where you’re headed till you know where you’ve been,” I feel compelled to take a quick glance back at the year that’s about to end — in particular, the second half.

I started this blog — nervous, excited, and utterly clueless — on July 3, 2010. It was one of the smartest decisions I’ve ever made. It’s brought me friends, jobs, and a place in the cosmos. It’s also brought me hope, which is something that was in rather short supply up to that point.

To those wonderful people who read my ramblings (and especially those who comment): thank you. Poring over my site stats has fast become an obsession that wouldn’t be possible without your generous clicks.

But enough idle chitchat! Here’s the list of my ten most-viewed posts of 2010.

One of the toughest things about plonking yourself down in a new country is dealing with the constant tension between your own cultural values and those of your borrowed homeland. Sometimes  … Continue reading

The myth of the Glamorous Expat#10 (tie): The myth of the Glamorous Expat
Posted on December 1, 2010

There’s a long-standing rumour circulating that expat life is inherently glamorous. Would that it were true! I’m sure some people do lead terribly exciting jet set lives in their host countries, but if my experience is anything to go by, … Continue reading

My velcro baby has blossomed

#9: My Velcro Baby has blossomed: Why expat life was good for my kids
Posted on September 13, 2010

Raising kids is a crap shoot: you do your best, but there are no guarantees they’ll turn out well. Throw in a parenting choice that’s the slightest bit unconventional — moving to another country with your children, for example … Continue reading

Posted on August 8, 2010

Yesterday, my lovely cousin Stella Maria married James, her longtime beau. The wedding was low-key and fun (just like the couple themselves), and as entertaining as you’d expect when  … Continue reading

Squatting in Singapore#7: Squatting in Singapore
Posted on July 16, 2010

Every new expat experiences what I call the Dorothy Moment (so named in honour of the sweet young thing who famously suspected she wasn’t in Kansas anymore.) It’s that second of blinding clarity when it becomes apparent that  … Continue reading

Benny the Irish Polyglot#6: My new hero: Benny the Irish Polyglot
Posted on November 2, 2010

I’m in love. I wasn’t expecting it to happen. I’ve been married to Chef Boyardee for nearly 20 years, so I certainly wasn’t looking for anyone new. But one day I was  … Continue reading

My life as an au pair#5: My life as an au pair. Chapter 3: In which I reflect on what I learned
Posted on July 9, 2010

To recap the story so far: In my youth, I spent far too many months in a situation straight out of Dickens (only with much better food and slightly better hygiene.) My experience as an au pair in France was … Continue reading

A snowstorm in Singapore#4: A snowstorm in Singapore
Posted on December 13, 2010

I wasn’t always Canadian. I wasn’t born here; I don’t have any Canadian blood in me. Maybe that’s why I hate winter so much: the English/Irish blood I inherited from my parents isn’t thick enough to  … Continue reading

Canadians celebrated Thanksgiving Day earlier this week, and reflecting on my blessings naturally got me thinking about how grateful I am for all the good that came of living abroad.  So in keeping with the theme of the season, and … Continue reading
